Sarin Gas
Hundreds of people nationwide have died in the last couple years from Sarin Gas. Sarin is an invisible gas that is capable of killing people. It fills the victim’s lungs to the point that they can no longer breathe. In a simpler concept: it suffocates people. Sarin was originally created as a pesticide in Germany. However, now it is known as a nerve agent- a very dangerous one. It is daunting to think that something as simple as a bug spray could become as deadly as a suffocation gas; especially when it becomes common knowledge that it is being used in a foreign country. Sarin should be internationally banned for several different reasons: it is wrong to suffocate people, especially when they do not know what is wrong; innocent people are dying; and if Sarin Gas is being manufactured, other countries (especially surrounding ones), tend to pay closer attention to the nation producing the chemical.
Sarin is best known to silently and slowly kill people. Sarin Gas is extremely poisonous (“Sarin Gas”. Nilesema). Consequently, if anybody were to even breathe it, it can kill them- without them even knowing. It would be just like walking into a store and randomly not being able to catch a breath- it is a scary thought. No country should have the ability to gas people. Iran is producing the deadly chemical (Kahlili, Reza. “Iran reportedly…” ). This could be evidence that other countries are already thinking of manufacturing it for military use. Why create it if not to use it? For threats? That is not much better. Lastly, Sarin is considered a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) (Laub, Zachary. “Sarin” ).This proves that many countries are afraid of it being used as a weapon, because it is so deadly.
One of the major problems with Sarin is that when it is used, it usually kills innocent people. More than 1,400 people have recently died from Sarin- some of which were children (Agence France Presse. “What is Sarin? ...”). This shows that innocent people are dying from the use of this terrible gas. In addition, Sarin can contaminate water or food supplies. This also proves that besides the gas itself, it can also spread and contaminate the food and water people drink as well (Agence France Presse. “What is Sarin? …“). The contamination is also capable of killing innocent people. Finally, if a person is affected by Sarin, the muscles in their body malfunction. After the muscle spasms come the inability to breathe, and following that, seizures, vomiting, and the heart stops(Avril, Tom. :The agony of death”).
If Sarin is produced in a country, other countries will immediately turn their attention to the producing country. For example, eleven nations: “Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States” signed a joint statement agreeing to “support efforts of the United States and other countries to reinforce the prohibition on the use of chemical weapons” (“UK delivered Syria chemicals needed…”). This shows that other countries do immediately focus on the country/countries producing chemicals. Also, Russia turned over a 100-page report to U.N. concluding that the Syrian rebels had used the gas, not the Syrian government (Maloof, Michael F. “U.S. military…”). This provides evidence that other countries are interested in what happens with the country using Sarin. Finally, on June 23rd, 2006, “the U.S. armed forces released a report to Congress stating that allied forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions containing degraded mustard or Sarin gas since 2003”(CNN Library. “Sarin Fast Facts”). This means the U.S. has been attempting to collect Sarin from other areas, whereas to reduce the chances of Sarin being used in combat.
Overall, Sarin gas is a very deadly chemical that is capable of causing a ton of problems. It was created as a pesticide, and transformed into a weapon of mass destruction. Some may say that we can use it for brinkmanship, but in reality, that means that other countries could do it right back to us. And a foreign country might actually do it. Many people have died from the use of Sarin gas, and many of them were children. Plus, many countries appear to keep a close eye on countries that use or produce the chemical. Thus, Sarin gas should be internationally banned.

Night and Its Relations to Our World
It is possible to relate Night by Elie Wiesel to our world (both past and present), and society, as well as personal experiences. People in the world generally try to hide or “cover up” things. There are many instances in history when this has happened. Also, in the book Night, many details led to my realization that throughout the world, people try to hide the truth. In Night, proof of this is shown repeatedly. People everywhere have always tried to hide things: in society, Night, and even I have tried.
There are many examples of "cover-up" attempts in the book. A few examples are on pages 19, 61, and 66. On page 19 of Night, the Jewish people try to believe that the Germans were not bad, and that they would not do anything, even though they all knew the Germans were bad news. In other words, the Jewish lied to themselves to cover up the painful thoughts that something bad might happen. On page 61, Elie talks about meeting the French girl that he had met in Auschwitz earlier. She explained to him that she had lied, and had forged her birth paperwork to say that she was not Jewish. As a result, she had more freedom than the other Jewish people. A third reference to hiding things is on page 66. On page 66, Idek (one of the guards in Auschwitz) threatened to lash Elie if he told anybody what he had caught Idek doing. It was a very cruel, yet effective way to cover-up his wrongdoings. In general, there are many references to people hiding things in the book Night.
In addition to the examples that can be found in the book, there are many examples of people hiding things (and things people have hidden) in the world as well. One example of a past cover-up is the Watergate Scandal. According to History, President Nixon was caught trying to cover up a busted thievery of documents from the Democratic National Convention. He was caught paying off the FBI and firing the “insubordinate” ones. Another reference in the world is car companies omitting that their cars emit large amounts of carbon dioxide. According to Larry West , “[A]utomobiles and light trucks are responsible for nearly half of all greenhouse effect gases emitted by automobiles globally”. If you were to buy a car, the car salesman would not mention the cost of the car on the environment, so he would be omitting the truth. In other words, covering the bad parts. A final example of a historical attempted “cover-up” was back when Adolph Hitler was in power. According to Jewish Virtual Library, the crematorium in Auschwitz was blown up by the Germans on January 26, 1945, in order to cover up the horrible crimes the Germans had committed. These examples give proof that throughout the world, people always try to hide things.
At some points in life, I have even found myself attempting to hide things. For example, once in a while, if my closet is a mess, I will attempt to hide the mess by distracting my grandmother every time she brings it up. That way, I will not get in trouble, and I can clean it when I have time. Another example of personal cover ups is when my mother passed away. When she died, I lied to myself, telling myself that she was still alive, and that I would wake up to find out that I was just having a really horrible dream. I hid the truth from myself, because I did not want to (and could not) believe she was gone. A final example of me trying to hide things is when my little brother and I fight. When we fight, if we bump into something, or make noise by throwing each other into things, we will both lie to save each other from getting in trouble. We hide the truth to avoid getting caught.
Overall, there are many different instances of people covering things up: in the book, society today, and even in ourselves. The book Night still remains relevant today because it helps explain that people try to hide things. Throughout our existence, many pieces of evidence lie in our history about people hiding the truth. Some cases are more extreme than others, but in general, people hide things all of the time. They can lie or omit the truth. Some will go to great lengths to ensure that something is not found, such as in the Watergate Scandal. However, in conclusion, people have always tried to hide or “cover-up” things.
