Characterization
Leo: Round (his thoughts are portrayed throughout the novel), Dynamic (he wants to be different with Stargirl by the end of the book), Protagonist (he is picked on for being with Stargirl). Leo wants desperately to be with Stargirl without being shunned by his entire school. The problem is that it seems he can't have the best of both worlds..
Stargirl: Round (she starts as a very strange character, and not much is known about her, but towards the middle of the book, she explains herself to Leo, making her a round character), Dynamic (she changes into Susan just for Leo's sake), Protagonist (she is herself, even when being shunned by the whole school for being different). Stargirl is a very unique character, who acts the way everyone should. She doesn't worry about herself, but she is always concerned with everybody else. She is a very sweet, outgoing young girl.
Archie: Flat (not much is explained about Archie except for the fact that he is an archaeologist), Archie is a static character because he remains intelligent, deeply concerned, and very thoughtful throughout the book. Archie is an archaeologist that teaches the kids many things every time they come to his house.
Hillari Kimble: Flat (not much is explained except that she hates Stargirl from start to finish), Static (hates Stargirl the entire novel; besides that, she is the exact same), Antagonist (hates Stargirl). Hillari (as mentioned previously) hates Stargirl. She explains that Stargirl is a phony from day one, and even at the end of the book, slaps Stargirl.

Summary: Stargirl Caraway moved to Minnesota, and Leo misses her. 15 years later, when Leo is in college, he receives a porcupine necktie from Stargirl.
Themes:
One theme of the book is kindness. Kindness occurs everywhere in the novel. Stargirl's character in particular seems to scream kindness. Throughout the book, Stargirl worries more about other people than she does herself. She sings happy birthday to kids, she buys a bike for a kid who recovered from a broken bone, and even attends a funeral when she doesn't even know the deceased person. Also, in the end of the novel, Stargirl gets smacked by Hillari Kimble, but she does not retaliate. Instead, she kisses her on the cheek. This shows that kindness is a very important theme in the story.
Another theme is cliques. Cliques occur throughout the book, and are very important. For example, when Stargirl first appears at Mica High, nobody wants to be near her. Students see her as 'unsafe and different'. The reason she is 'unsafe' is due to cliques. cliques are groups of people with very similar beliefs. Mica High itself was a clique at first, shunning Stargirl because she was totally unlike the rest of them. They had no idea how to respond, so they shunned her.
A third theme of the novel is Love. In the book, Stargirl does all of these strange and abnormal things to show Leo that she loved him. For example, when she posted the sign on the roadrunner that she loved him, or the valentines day card, or even the kiss that they had right after Leo called her different. These things show all of the crazy things that Stargirl is willing to do for her love of Leo.
Motifs:
One motif in the story was the song, happy birthday. The song itself was a motif because it was sung to almost every student at Mica High that had a birthday during the school year. It represented the kindness that was Stargirl, and that kindness repeated itself over and over again.
Another motif was Society. Throughout the book, society in Mica, Arizona was always very important. At first, society had no idea what to do about Stargirl. But later, when they realized just how different she really was, they shunned her for being different. Society ruled the area, and they ruled against Stargirl.
A third motif was support. Support was shown all over in the novel. For example: when Archie explains that Stargirl is different, he supports her by not siding with the kids, claiming that she was weird. He also explains that Stargirl is not as everyone sees, and that she seems to be more primitive than most people. In these ways, support is shown throughout the book, and much was from Archie, the Paleontologist.
Symbols:
One of the biggest symbols in the story was Stargirl's Ukulele. The ukulele was a symbol because Stargirl played it every single time somebody had a birthday. Even Hillari Kimble. She would play her ukulele and everybody would stop, get quiet, and enjoy the sound. The ukulele represented the peace between the students. Stargirl started playing her ukulele in the beginning, when everybody was calm. Towards the end of the story, when a ukulele club is proposed and nobody joins, this symbolizes that the peace was broken.
Senor Seguaro was a huge symbol in the book. During the story, whenever Leo was at Archie's- near the cactus- he learned something new. Therefore, Senor Seguaro represents knowledge and understanding, because it was the site where all of the learning occurred.
Tones:
One major tone of the book is excitement. The author portrays this feeling by making Stargirl as different, and brilliant as he could. Every time Stargirl did something, the reader's attention was grabbed. And every time the students would shun Stargirl, the reader was uneasy. Overall, this book is filled with excitement.
Another major tone is happiness. The happiness point of view of the story occurs in the book multiple times. One such example is when all of the students become unique, and mimic Stargirl. This thought is intended to make the reader very happy. Also, when Cinnamon nuzzles Leo, the reader can imagine how kind Stargirl (and her pet) really are.
A third tone of the book is sadness, or depression. This aspect is displayed through all of the shunning of Stargirl and Leo, which takes place in many places in the book. Also, this is especially shown during Stargirl's time on the Hot Seat. When the 'jury' starts being mean to Stargirl, the reader is supposed to be upset, or even angry towards the kids for being so mean to such a loving person.
Moods:
A major viewpoint of the reader when reading is envy. Envy can be experienced when the reader finally realizes that Stargirl has literally no worries. She cares more about others than herself, and it shows. For many people, being like Stargirl would be a dream come true, and some people are jealous of her for it.
A second mood given to the reader during the novel is peace. Peace is shown by making one of the main characters, Stargirl Caraway (the irony- [Care-away]) quite literally worry-free. This gives the reader the temporary sense that nothing is wrong in Stargirl's world, giving the reader the feeling of peace.
A third mood given to the readers is hatred. This mood occurs quite frequently, although many people would not admit to it. When reading the novel, the reader will tend to feel a growing disliking, and eventually a hatred towards the students shunning Stargirl for being herself. Perhaps the most hatred becomes aimed at Hillari Kimble, the girl who hates Stargirl with a burning passion, that eventually causes the common reader's worst fears to come true.
Questions: Does Leo ever see her again? Does Stargirl still love Leo? Will the two ever be together again?
Connections: I have moved across the country: moving is a very big deal. To move, you must say goodbye to all your friends, neighbors, and even some local townsfolk before you go, because you don't know if you will return. And you don't know if it will be the same when you get back.
